[EN] FREEDOM FROM FENCES

It is no secret that under the new Australian Government, life for asylum seekers is worse than ever and many are losing hope.
Amnesty caseworkers make sure asylum seekers get the support they need.
Help restore hope by donating to the Refugee Casework Team in 2014.
THE HORRIBLE REALITY FOR ASYLUM SEEKERS

In the midst of the worst global refugee crisis in 20 years, millions of people are fleeing unimaginable horror, including torture and death, in countries like Syria and Afghanistan.
Some make the dangerous journey to Australia, only to be held in soul-crushing, indefinite detention. Families are separated, many live in poverty and most are truly voiceless.
Despite the growing number of asylum seekers in Australia forced to live behind bars or in poverty – 30,000 and counting – the Australian Government still refuses to process anyone. More people need our help than ever.
Amnesty's Refugee Casework Team fight for asylum seekers’ rights and provide friendship to people who often feel forgotten. However, the demand on our team is overwhelming.
HOW WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Amnesty's Refugee Casework Team supports asylum seekers, making sure they have access to vital services, such as medical and mental health care, and legal advice. But most importantly, our caseworkers provide hope.
Many asylum seekers in detention feel isolated and have few, if any, visitors. Amnesty caseworkers regularly phone and visit, showing them they are not alone and that someone cares.
Our caseworkers assist in practical ways as well, including:
  • helping to prepare paperwork for visa applications
  • organising referrals to various support agencies
  • supporting individual cases to ensure their claims are assessed fairly
  • lobbying the government to intervene in particularly vulnerable cases.
Your support will allow the Refugee Casework Team to continue offering emotional support to asylum seekers, as well as carry out their valuable case work.
